01
( What They Are )

What Are
Porcelain Tiles?

Porcelain tiles are a type of ceramic tile fired at temperatures above 1,200°C using refined kaolin clay. The high-fired process produces a tile with distinct technical advantages.

  • AWater absorption below 0.5%, classified as impervious under AS/NZS 13006
  • BCompressive strength significantly higher than standard ceramic
  • CColour and pattern fired through the body, or applied as a surface layer
  • DResistance to staining, frost, and heavy foot traffic

These properties make porcelain the preferred tile for high-traffic residential areas, commercial spaces, outdoor terraces, and wet areas including bathrooms and laundries.

Slip Resistance
& the NCC

Under the National Construction Code, wet areas in residential and commercial buildings must meet minimum slip resistance requirements tested to AS 4586:2013. The P-rating system applies to pendulum tests on wet tiles.

  • P1Minimum for low-risk areas such as dry indoor floors
  • P3Required for bathrooms, laundries, and pool change rooms
  • P4Recommended for pool surrounds and ramps
  • P5Industrial and high-risk wet environments

Every DW Tiles product listing includes the AS 4586 slip rating. Our team can advise on correct ratings for your specification.
