Yes, for most floor applications, porcelain outperforms ceramic. Here is why:
- AWater resistance: porcelain's below 0.5% absorption is essential for bathroom floors, laundries, and outdoor areas under the NCC
- BWear resistance: PEI IV to V rated porcelain handles foot traffic, trolleys, and furniture without surface degradation
- CSlip resistance: AS 4586-compliant porcelain is available in P3+ ratings for wet area compliance
- DLongevity: the denser tile body resists chipping at corners and edges in high-traffic areas
Ceramic is suitable for internal dry floors in low-traffic rooms (for example, a bedroom or study) where budget is a primary consideration.
Better for
Bathroom Walls?
Ceramic tiles remain popular for bathroom walls. Because walls are not load-bearing and do not face foot traffic or standing water (compared to floors), ceramic's lower water absorption (below 3%) is acceptable for splashback and shower walls above the waterline.
However, for shower floors and wet-area floors where the NCC requires impervious ratings, porcelain or a vitrified tile with below 0.5% absorption is required.
Recommendation: use porcelain on floors and wet areas, ceramic on dry bathroom walls if budget is a constraint.

Outdoors?
No. Standard ceramic tiles are not suitable for Australian outdoor applications for two reasons:
